The opening of this facility was Mallorca’s first strong commitment to golf, as demonstrated by the pompous celebration held for its inauguration, which was attended by distinguished personalities from all over Europe, such as the Prince of Monaco and his wife Grace Kelly.
From that same period is the Golf Son Servera course that began operating in 1967, with 9 holes. Although at that time it was called Golf Punta Rotja, later going on to receive its current name.
From that moment, numerous high-quality golf courses with exquisite designs began to proliferate in Mallorca. This, together with the island’s pleasant climate, which allows golf to be played even when the rest of Europe is immersed in rain or snow storms, has meant that Mallorca hosts some of the most prestigious golf tournaments and that golf tourism is not have done nothing but grow.
PGA European Tour
The PGA European Tour is the organization that integrates the three European professional golf circuits (European Tour, European Seniors Tour and Challenge Tour), being the most important entity on the European continent and the second most relevant worldwide, only behind the American PGA Tour.
A clear example of the high quality of the golf courses in Mallorca is that the Majorcan Santa Ponsa golf course hosted the PGA European Tour de Golf in 1998. In that edition, Severiano Ballesteros won the test.
Another milestone that has helped to position Mallorca as an international benchmark in golf courses is the celebration of the final of the Challenge Tour, within the second division. Thus, “Road to Mallorca” circulated through the 23 world tournaments that make up the challenge, attracting numerous professional players from all corners of the planet.

This increase in the number of golf lovers is due, to a large extent, to the effect produced by the pandemic, since it is a sport that can be practiced outdoors and in which there is almost no contact between players. However, it is also explained by a greater interest of the female population in a sport that, historically, has been more masculine. At this point, the fact that the island has outstanding female golfers like Nuria Iturrioz, who won three tournaments on the European Tour, contributes to the desire of many female golfers to visit Majorcan courses.
This high influx of professionals and amateurs, mostly from the United Kingdom, Germany and the rest of Spain, is possible thanks to the excellent air connections that exist between the island and the main European cities. This makes it possible for lovers of this sport, in just a couple of hours, to travel to Mallorca, to enjoy the high level of the golf courses and its pleasant temperature.
However, the secret of Mallorca’s success as a golf destination is not only in its wide range of infrastructures and its exciting design, but also in the comfort that the island offers to move from one course to another.
