Top places to watch the sunset in and around Mallorca
As we explained at the beginning of the article, in Mallorca you will find countless corners where you can enjoy a magical sunset. Here we tell you which are our favourite places to watch the sunset in Mallorca.
Sa Foradada viewpoint: a classic to watch the sunset in Mallorca
If there is a traditional place where both locals and visitors go to enjoy the sunset in Mallorca, that is the Mirador de Sa Foradada, located in the heart of the Serra de Tramuntana, between Caló S’Estaca and Cala de Deià. A place of great beauty that has inspired many artists, since from there, the colors of the so-called golden hour look especially spectacular.
The viewpoint is actually a rocky outcrop with a hole that allows you to enjoy magnificent panoramic views of the island. That hole is what gives the viewpoint its name (“foradada” which means “hole”). Legend has it that the hole is the result of a cannon shot that received the rocky mound, in the year 1582, during a war between North Africans and Christians.
Being such a popular place, many people come every day to watch the sunset from there, especially on Sundays. Therefore, to locate yourself in a good place at the viewpoint, it is advisable to arrive well in advance. The good thing about this place is that, in addition to being able to enjoy the sunset in Mallorca from the Mirador de Sa Foradada, you can choose to follow the path that leads to the coast, from where you can also enjoy excellent views.
Another option is to go to one of the terraces that you will find in the viewpoint and enjoy the show from there, with good background music and a cold drink in hand. The Restaurant Miradors de Na Foradada is one of the establishments with the best views.
The best beaches in Mallorca to watch the sunset
Another excellent option to enjoy the sunset in Mallorca is to watch it from the beach. On the island you will find numerous coves in which to experience this magical moment, some of the most popular are:
Es Trenc: a beach with its own light
Es Trenc is one of the most popular coves in Mallorca to enjoy the sunset, since during the golden hour the beach wears its own colors. When the sun goes down in Es Trenc, its sand, its sea and that little piece of sky that covers it are filled with colorful nuances and reflections, turning the beach into a unique place to enjoy this wonderful spectacle of nature.
In Es Trenc you can enjoy the sunset from the sand itself or go to Ses Covetes, another place especially appreciated by Majorcans, to watch the sunset. At the entrance you will find a beach bar with music and shows.
The romantic Cala del Delta
If you want to enjoy a romantic sunset in Mallorca, Cala de Delta is one of the best places.
This place is formed by a group of natural pools that are distributed in the set of rocky coves in the area.
Sant Elm: Sunsets over Dragonera Island
The charming town of Sant Elm is located in the western part of Mallorca. From its coast you can enjoy wonderful views of Dragonera Island, a small islet in the Balearic Islands, classified as a natural park, which looks especially beautiful when bathed in the colors of the sunset.
To enjoy the sunset in Sant Elm, it is best to follow the coast of the town until you reach Punta Blanca. From there, it is quite easy to access the tower Torre de Cala en Basset, if you feel like enjoying the colors of the sunset while you walk.
See the sunset in Mallorca from its lighthouses
The lighthouses are also fantastic places to enjoy the sunset, since from them you can fully appreciate how the orange and reddish colors are projected on the horizon of the sea. In addition, for lovers of photography, this type of construction constitutes elements with great visual value, which allow magnificent photographic compositions to be created. The most popular lighthouses to watch the sunset in Mallorca are:
Faro de Cap Gros
The Cap Gros Lighthouse is located on the cliffs that bear the same name, 120 meters above sea level. From there you can enjoy excellent views of the Bay of Sóller and the town of the same name.
If you are looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of people, Cap Gros can be a perfect place to let yourself be enveloped by the magic of the sunset. Getting there is quite simple, since the car park is nearby and it is not usually very crowded. In addition, between the car park and the lighthouse, you will find the Es Mirall bar, where you can stop to enjoy the views while having a drink.
Faro de Formentor
The Formentor Lighthouse is located 188 meters above sea level, on the peninsula that bears the same name. Its construction dates back to the 19th century and it is said that it was one of the most difficult lighthouses to build on the island, given its location.
From this location you will be able to enjoy some of the most striking views of the Mallorcan landscape: rough terrain, the dark blue of the sea in the deep areas that surround the island and the wonderful contrast of the orange sunset sky against the intense blue of the sea.
The drawback of this place is that to access it you have to travel 15 kilometers along a narrow road, so in summer, when the influx of visitors is high, it is common for there to be traffic restrictions on the access road.
Faro Cap Blanc
Another alternative to watch the sunset is the Cap Blanc Lighthouse, located on one of the outcrops of the south coast of Mallorca, 100 meters above sea level. The way up there is long, but it is worth it, as you can enjoy impressive views of the cliff.
Sunsets in and around Mallorca between the mountains
An alternative to enjoy peaceful sunsets in Mallorca is to go into the interior of the island in search of one of its mountain viewpoints. This option will allow you to enjoy sunsets surrounded by nature and in much calmer environments than those you will find in coastal areas, especially in the summer months. Our favorite places to enjoy the sunset in Mallorca between mountains are:
- Mont de Randa: it is one of the highest points in the south of Mallorca. From there you can see different angles of the sunset, all of them impressive.
- Mirador de Ses Puntes: it is located near Valldemossa, to get there you have to walk for about an hour, so it is a place only suitable for hikers, but from where calm is assured.
